To enjoy Guy Ritchie’s latest foray into making another Guy Ritchie movie, one need only accept that you don’t ruin good window-shopping by asking questions about the Ferrari’s fuse box. To place In the Grey alongside films anyone will still be ranking years from now, you’d need that Ferrari to hit you at top speed.
It’s got Ritchie’s signature sleek production, his apparently bottomless ability to command top acting talent, and a screenplay with roughly the structural integrity of a Jenga tower at last call. Mercifully, at 98 minutes, it also has the good manners to leave before you start resenting the company.
Eiza González plays Rachel, a fixer hired to recover a billion dollars from a very bad man, which naturally requires Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal to assemble a team of heavily armed professionals and steal it back. There are elaborate plans, inevitable complications, expensive toys, betrayals, explosions and exceptionally well-tailored people moving briskly through beautiful locations. Exactly how all of it fits together is a question best left unasked. Again: Ferrari. Fuse box. What does it matter?
Watch it once. Guy Ritchie has already watched it enough times for both of us.
